Single Ply Roofing (TPO, EPDM, PVC)
Single Ply Roofing is the fastest growing roof application to be used in commercial roofing. Single-ply membranes can be mechanically fastened or fully adhered over an existing roof or new construction. The most widely used Single-ply membranes in the market today are TPO, PVC and EPDM all which are able to offer great weatherability. versatility and durability. TPO and PVC and EPDM membranes are able to offer cool roof solutions, through their smooth, light colored reflective membranes. Environmentally friendly cool roofs are able to reduce buildings cooling costs and overall energy consumption by reflecting and deflecting the heat and UV rays from the sun. TPO (Thermo Plastic Olefin) membrane is created from a variety of rubber like materials, mainly polypropylene and ethylene propylene. The blending of these materials together, create a unique and durable membrane with a great deal of flexibility, even at low temperatures, without the use of liquid plasticizers. TPO is one of the “greenest” single ply membranes on the market with no chlorine containing ingredients included in its production and can also be reprocessed and recycled 100% unlike some of their other single ply competitors.
PVC- Polyvinyl Chloride.
PVC membrane has been used for decades in both the American and European markets. PVC is made from carbon, hydrogen and chlorine that are then filled with plasticizers to form a softer, more flexible material like what we see with roofing membranes. The membrane can be mechanically fastened or fully adhered. PVC is ready available in a wide variety of colors and is known for its excellent grease, chemical and flame resistance.
EPDM- Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, EPDM is a rubber material primarily consisting of ethylene and propylene and transforms into a rubbery state when diene is added to the formula. EPDM is favorite Single-ply choice amongst northern states with intense winter conditions. The dark color membrane helps attract the heat from the sun which aids in warming the building’s interior as well as helps to melt away heavy snow loads. EPDM is also available in white.
